Dazed & Confused
The Old Ship

On the East End's Cable Street stands a rather ordinary looking pub that was frequented in the thirties by Oswald Mosley and his Fascist cronies. More recently, it served as jolly little strip joint. No longer fascist in spirit but not averse to naked ladies, the Old Ship is now a (badly-kept) secret location that acts as an art-gallery, theatre, bedroom, atelier and speak-easy. If you're lucky enough to get in - visits are invitation only or by appointment - you'll find artists like Aurora Poison creating beautiful capelets woven from human hair whilst around her mad people build wheelchair bound themepark rides, known to some as The bum-bum train.

Joe Royle, its Director (or Captain), believes the Old Ship is about 'the people who sail in her'. Its haphazard programme of performance pieces and exhibitions is punctuated by bands like Kill Kenada wanting to capture its dilapidated wonder in their music videos. And some folk - Matt Lucas to be precise - borrow objects from the Ship's marvellous collection of props for their wedding day.

Future projects include an exhibition in conjunction with the Fordham gallery where artwork will be exchanged for foodstuffs. Try your darndest to score an invite by joining their mailing list. It might ultimately lead on to an Old Ship supper where you'll feast merrily on Brazilian pig's ear stew.
